CADE BROWN ON FIRE IN CANBERRA

Ex Bumble Bee Cade Brown has almost single handedly steered his Canberra Club side Weston Creek to the ACT first grade Premiership this season. Cade scored 170 in the semi final win over Queanbeyan and backed that up with a mammoth 220 not out in the final against Western District as his side secured the Douglas Cup. Cade was skipper of the side and not surprisingly the man of the match. Congrats Cade!

ANNUAL DINNER WRAP

The 2008-09 Annual Dinner was held on Saturday April 4th at the UNSW Roundhouse and as always proved to be a very enjoyable and entertaining evening.

The night’s first award was a richly deserved Life Membership awarded to 1st Grade Manager Pete Richardson. Anyone who has spent any time around the Club over the last 10 years or so would know just how much time Richo puts in to the Club organising training, managing 1st grade and attending club functions and all while being based down in The Gong. Congratulations Richo!

This year’s Player of the Year award was hotly contested with Tim Lang, Murray Creed and Ravin Hettiarachchi all having big seasons but in the end it was 1st grade skipper Tim Lang who collected the most points to claim the major prize. Langy scored 731 runs @ 45.69, took 28 wickets @ 34.07, held 6 catches and was also the 2nd leading trainer at the Club this year (behind Blake Dean). Well played, Langy!

The Clubman of the Year award went to another deserving winner in Green Shield Manager Michael O’Brien. Mick has been a tireless servant to the Green Shield cause over recent seasons and puts in a lot of behind the scenes work as well as getting down to watch plenty of cricket around the grounds every Saturday. Again, congrats Mobby!

Hugh Le Lievre capped the awards side of the night off when he presented an outstanding Barr-Turn speech and brought the house to its feet in awarding the dreaded stripy jacket to current Club Secretary Paul “Seros” Serov. Sneaky certainly proved this year that if you hang around a Club of psychos for long enough you become one. It should definitely be a cracking Barr-Turn next year.

The night’s other awards went to Vince Mauric (Fieldsman of the Year), Mitch Gowland (PG’s Player of the Year), Blake Dean (Rookie of the Year), Scott Gray (Green Shield Player of the Year), Murray Creed (1st Grade Batting), Timm Van Der Gugten (1st grade Bowling), Ben Wakim (2nd Grade Batting), Josh Webb (2nd Grade Bowling), Pradeep Widana-Pathirana (3rd Grade Batting), Eric Zehner (3rd Grade Bowling), Dan Mulvenna (4th Grade Batting), Chris Ward (4th Grade Bowling), Andrew Jones (5th Grade Batting), Lincoln Lui (5th Grade Bowling), Luke Williams (6th Grade Batting) and Ravin Hettiarachchi (6th Grade Bowling). Congrats all.

Club President Elect and 5th Grade Skipper Andrew Jones again proved he is one of the finest MC’s in the game with a faultless performance that was only enhanced by the quality of this year’s guests.

Emeritus Professor Stanley Livingstone, quite possibly the Club’s oldest living player, provided a thorough and highly entertaining insight into the Club’s early days as well as providing the cricket history buffs in the room with a rare opportunity to listen to first hand tales from the Bradman Era of Australian cricket. It really was a great window into the Club’s past and it was a privilege to see a man of Professor Livingstone’s standing at the Annual Dinner.

Former 1st Grade stalwart and current NRL supremo David Gallop showed a great straight bat to all of Jonesy’s probing NRL questions and then entertained the room with a few tales from his far less celebrated days as a UNSW opening bowler. Showing he is a man that leads his organisation by example he was not spotted at the Regent Hotel afterwards.

Club Legend Henry Lawson delivered the goods as always and was even given what is probably becoming an increasingly rare opportunity by Jonesy to talk the room through his 8 wicket haul against the West Indies in Adelaide back in 1984-85!

And emerging legend Dan Christian proved again he is a Bumble Bee through and through despite shifting allegiances to the Redbacks for professional reasons as he provided an interesting review of his latest 1st class season.

All in all another top quality night. Enjoy the off season!

MUZZ FINISHES YEAR AS TOP RUN SCORER IN SYDNEY

Congratulations to 1st grade batsman Murray Creed who finished the year as the leading run scorer in Sydney Grade Cricket over the regular season. STARK TO PLAY OFF SEASON WAITING GAME

After building it up for most of the season it is certainly disappointing to have to report that work commitments again contrived to ensure Rob Stark spent the last Saturday of the season in a blue uniform rather than a white one. It means that Starky will spend the off season visualising taking the two wickets he needs to equal Greig Robinson’s all time Club wicket taking record. Work and injury permitting it should at least ensure a big start to the season next year…

ROUND 15 REPORTS

It was a disappointing end to a disappointing season as the top 5 grades went down to Gordon and 6's lost to Randwick-Petersham on the last day of the season. Like much of the season most grades set themselves up at various stages throughout the day but just couldn’t put together a complete performance to come through with the win. Unfortunately the Club finished in last spot on the Club Championship with all sides missing the finals by a fair margin.

1ST GRADE
In first grade Beau Casson scored 107 for Gordon opening the batting to help the home team to a sizeable 9/280 at Chatswood Oval. Dropped catches did not help The Bees’ cause. The pick of the figures came from left arm spinner Cameron Stewart who took 2/42 from his 10 overs.

In reply Mitch Gowland played a brilliant knock that included 5 sixes and 5 fours before Matt Nicholson had him caught for 99 off 94 balls. Unfortunately no other batsman was able to build on their start and The Bees fell 59 runs short.

1’s finished the year in 20th spot with just 3 wins but Murray Creed had a truly outstanding season to finish the year as the leading run scorer in Sydney Grade Cricket with 941 runs at 55.35. Well done Muz on an outstanding season!

Gordon 9/280 (C Stewart 2/42 S Crichton 2/54) def UNSW 221 (M Gowland 99 R Medley 26) at Chatswood Oval

2nd GRADE
Second grade went down pretty comprehensively to Gordon at the VG with Zoom Zoom Zehner the pick of the bowlers with 3/46 and Angus Robson standing firm with the bat to score an unbeaten 78.

2’s finished the year in 20th spot with only the win against Randwick-Petersham in Round 13 saving the fellas from a nude lap of the University.

Gordon 7/295 (E Zehner 3/46 J Webb 2/60) def UNSW 6/159 (A Robson 78*) at Village Green

3RD GRADE
In a rare treat for UNSW web fans two match reports are available for the 3rd grade game at Gordon. A communication mishap of sorts ensured both Mick Mag and Alex Charlwood wrote reports for this game. Readers can compare and contrast their reports below.

Mick's report:

In 3rd grade a tacky Beauchamp Oval wicket provided the UNSW seam bowlers with plenty of early assistance after a finals bound Gordon chose to bat first. Both Luke Ford and Eriq Parsons bowled well but were not backed up in the field as catches went down with disturbing regularity. Gordon’s number 3 batsman benefited three times before he’d scored 10 runs and he went on to compile 91. All the bowlers bowled well including skipper Dan Bowcock who threw himself the ball for a rare burl at the crease and received plenty of respect in his 8 over spell of 0/22. Veteran off spinner Porno Mag made a cameo 3rd grade appearance and burgled 5/60 off his 10 as wickets tumbled in pursuit of quick runs at the death. Alex Charlwood also bowled well and took 2/41 and was another bowler to suffer from the butter-fingered UNSW fielders. Despite the poor catching and some sleepy work in the ring Gordon were restricted to 9/216 off their 50 due to the generally good bowling.

In reply the UNSW chase almost never started with opener Shaheen Kumar still in the queue for a Bondi burger down at Oporto’s as the umpires made their way onto the field. A frantic dash ensured 42 did make it out onto the field to face up but there was plenty of panic around as Prads, the team’s number 3, was also in the same chicken queue!

After the early dramas things settled down and the chase went along solidly, if a tad behind the pace, until Skipper Bowcock came to the crease with the score around 3/80 in the 25th over. Bowie’s first scoring shot was a lofted 6 off the Gordon leg spinner and the assault didn’t stop as Bowie launched 6 sixes in a 24 ball innings of 50 that would have had IPL scouts dashing to their phones with claims of a new found Ranatunga-shaped legend in the making if indeed there had been any scouts present. Unfortunately though all Bowie has to show for his brutal knock is a big dent in his sister’s car’s roof and the unspeakable pain that comes with captaining his side to another loss. When Bowie got out the wheels fell off the UNSW run chase well and truly and we fell short by 55 runs.

Alex's report:

A decent fight was put up by the third grade bees against a side fifty odd points clear; however it ended with the – depressingly – familiar sound of the other team’s song in the sheds.

The toss was lost by the Bowcock, and Gordon didn’t hesitate to put themselves in to bat on a fair deck with a well soaked outfield. Two overs in and the first catch went down. Not wanting the fines jar to be empty we proceeded to drop another nine catches. Poor effort lads.

With the home side cruising along at 2 for 150 odd, with the ball a spitting image of a week old cake of soap, up strolled the P*Star. The Bowcock’s secret weapon struck in the 42nd over, and with some top class burgling finished the day with a well deserved 5/60 off 10. Gordon ended up a modest 9/216, a very achievable target.

With Gargamel out in the 8th over things weren’t looking too good. Then at 2/38 in the 12th, things looked worse. A consolidating partnership of 51 then ensued between Solo and 42, before 42 was stumped for a Victor-Jaregui-esque 29 off 88. The run-rate now approaching 7 an over, the match was looking a little out of our grasps. Enter the Bowcock. Never has Beauchamp Park seen such disrespect for average bowling; with Bowie slaughtering his way to 50 off 24 balls, taking 28 off one over – 4 6 6 . 6 6.

Solo fell not long after for a very well crafted 34. The card proves to be poor reading after this; with the bottom 6 amassing a third grade special of a measly 13 runs.

Well fought by the Bees in patches, but dropped chances and no runs in the tail handed the game to Gordon in the 45th over.

3’s ended the season in 17th spot with 3 wins.

Gordon 9/216 (M Mag 5/60 A Charlwood 2/41) def UNSW 161 (D Bowcock 50 M Hansen 34) at Beauchamp Park

4TH GRADE
From what I’ve heard 4’s grade bowled like legends and batted like busted a-holes in a game they should have won. No official match report has yet been received but if any report is received from skipper Tal Fleming it promises to be colourful. Word is Tal’s post match address summed up his frustrations, and probably those of quite a few at the Club, in a manner that left no-one in the sheds under any illusions.

4’s finished the year in 20th spot with 2 wins.

Gordon 172 (L Liu 3/46 R Dooley 2/25) def UNSW 107 (T Fleming 29 P Hood 19) at David Phillips North

5th GRADE
A familiar tale for 5th Grade, as we bowled and fielded well but failed to chase a low total. Losing the toss proved a blessing, as the DP South wicket was tacky early. This resulted in a succession of infield catches from our medium pacers, 7 of 8 of which were taken. Naeef Mostafa was the pick of the bowlers with 3-22 off 10 while Serena Williams recovered from a loose start to take 4-44 from his quota. That was pretty much the end of the good news for the day, as no batsman made more than 25 and we went down in the 49th over.

5’s finished the year in 18th spot with 3 wins.

Gordon 161 (L Williams 4/44 N Mustafa 2/22) def UNSW 127 (S Pearce 28*) at David Phillips South

6TH GRADE
6th Grade lost a thriller at Kensington Oval!

Fielding first on a wicket which offered a bit for the quicks, Rashid, Wettimuny and Mifsud bowled in great channels, creating a lot of doubt for the Randwick openers. In spite of the many ‘ooohs and ahhs’ from the guys behind the stumps, (and a few other utterances when chances were missed) the Bees weren’t able to break through.

Serov however, was able to make a few inroads; where some classic outswing bowling coupled with some magic in the field, brought about a fall of vital wickets at critical moments in the game. Together with some tight bowling from Sukumar and swift glovework from ‘Whitto’, the Bees were able to restrict Randy Petes to 177.

Chasing a relatively low total, on a slowish wicket, Saleh and Sukumar combined together for an aggressive opening stand, which consequently frustrated their opening bowlers. ‘Buds’ then accelerated the innings with a quick fire 34, muscling the ball over the infield, and smacking the ball over and into the neighboring lawn bowls club! With 60 runs to get in 15 overs, and with 8 wickets in hand, the Bees were cruising to victory. Naser Saleh compiled another gutsy fifty, the celebration of which brought a lot of smiles to all the boys overlooking in the pavilion! Nevertheless, an out of form middle order, together with some tight bowling by their spinners, resulted in New South to lose too many wickets and fall 13 runs short.

Randwick Petersham Gold 177 (A Sukumar 4/21 P Serov 4/42) def UNSW 163 (N Saleh 64 B Wickramaratna 34 A Sukumar 27)
