ROUND 6 PROGRESS SCORES

In 1st grade Skipper Tim Lang won the toss and had no hesitation in batting 1st on a hard pitch at a cloudless Village Green. Murray Creed and Mitch Gowland created momentum early, driving anything pitched up. With the help of a slick outfield, they brought up their 50 partnership in the 10th over. Just as the Student’s were looking in complete control Easts captain, Nick Berry, introduced himself into the attack with immediate effect, enticing Gowland outside off to be caught by Brad Haddin at 1st slip. In his next over, he snared Creed, caught driving uppishly at point. Two balls later he trapped James Henry in front to have the students teetering at 3-64. Dave Dawson and Blake Hutchison steadied the ship, with smart shot selection. Hutchison drove beautifully for a series of boundaries off Ed Zelma, to have the game evenly poised at 3-110 at lunch.

Hutchison was out shortly after lunch, edging to gully to be well caught by Wil Somerville. When Lang fell stumped by NSW keeper Peter Neville 6 balls later, the Students again looked in trouble at 5-122. Dawson was proving to be the stalwart of the innings and found a willing partner in Blake Dean. Together they put on 87 runs in a partnership of patient defence combined with some delightful strokes and good running. Just as they were getting the innings into a great position, Dean leg glanced Armstrong too close to the keeper. Neville dived full stretched to pull off a spectacular catch. In his next over, Armstrong got one to pop off a length to Dawson and Somerville pulled off another good catch in the gully. Charlie Matthews attempted a quick single 1st ball only to be run out and the Students’ innings was falling off the rails, 8-214. Easts wrapped up the tail shortly after tea, UNSW all out 225.

With 23 overs left in the day and four first class cricketers in the Easts top order, the final session promised some exciting cricket. While Lang and Matthews had Sam Robson and Nevill looking uncomfortable on occasions, it was 1st change bowler Alex Day who made the crucial breakthrough, Nevill caught behind off a ball that lifted from a length, 1-35. In the next over Lang darted one back into Robson and the umpire rewarded the raucous appeal. Two overs later Lang did the same thing to the Australian ‘keeper Brad Haddin and Easts were reeling at 3-56. Cam Stewart chipped in with the wicket of Somerville in the final overs to leave Easts 4-70 at stumps and the match evenly poised. Lang bowled 12 overs straight in the final session, maintaining his pace throughout, for the return of 12-4-2-22. A really good day of cricket at the Village Green and well poised going into Day 2.

ROUND 5 RESULTS

It was another strong round for UNSW with 1's, 2's and 5's all winning against Fairfield-Liverpool. 4's chalked up another run filled draw while 3's went down in a close encounter. It was a case of "more of the same" this week for the up and coming James McNeil and the veteran Pete Carson who both scored centuries for the 2nd round in succession. Macca finished on 160 in 2's while Pablo remained 152* in 4's. Jonesy's Ton-o-Meter gets another workout!

1ST GRADE
Fairfield won the toss and elected to bat on a flat looking pitch and fastish outfield. The Students worked hard for their chances in the 1st session, with Lang and Van der Gugten bowling tight lines but the breakthrough came off the 1st change, Chuck Matthews, who had Delpechitra well caught off by keeper Dawson off the inside edge. Zehner was unlucky to have state bat Lambert dropped at point soon after, a chance the Students would rue. Fairfield worked hard to be 1-93 at lunch.

In the first hour after lunch, the students really turned the screws, drying up the runs with Matthews snaring Harivel and Clark in quick succession. Lambert, while never looking fully in control of the attack, showed the determination required to play a big innings. Spinners Stewart and Henry slowed up the runs even more, with Henry trapping Williams in front just before tea – 4-159.

Good pressure straight after tea, lead to the run out of Hearn by the youngster Hutchison, before the patience of Lambert paid off, bringing up his century off 264 balls. He was smartly caught at gully by Henry off Van der Gugten shortly after. Attard and Wilcoxson brought up a 50 partnership made up of quick running and clever hitting aided by some poor catching before Matthews again made the breakthrough, bowling Attard. Wilcoxson was run out on the last ball of the day, leaving the game evenly poised at stumps Fairfield Liverpool 8-264 of 96 overs.

The students bowled well, Matthews 4-59 and tight bowling from the rest, but with better fielding would have been in a dominant position at stumps. The patient Lambert (102) and energetic partnership between Attard (34) and Wilcoxson (33) were the highlights for the batting side.

DAY 2
With Fairfield-Liverpool declaring before resumption we were set 265 for a win. The Uni openers began with a flurry, including Gowland being dropped off his first ball, but then settled in to grind out the against a probing new ball attack of Lambert and Hangyasi. With Creed in particular placing the ball well for ones and twos, the 50 partnership came up quickly. Gowland then chanced his arm outside off once too often edging Treuer behind. With Dawson joining Creed, Fairfield turned to their spinner Clark. Both Dawson and Creed played patiently, placing the ball into gaps nicely when offered the chance and pulling the occasional short ball for 4. Creed brought up his 50 off 87 balls just before lunch and, together with Dawson, put the Students in a powerful position, 1-124 at lunch.

Shortly after lunch, Dawson brought up his 50 off 76 balls but then smashed a short ball from Hangyasi straight to Harivel at point. Not long after Creed misplayed Clark, pushing the ball to Rohrer at slip and the Students looked slightly shaky. But Henry and Hutchison, the last game centurion, continued the innings in the same tradesman- like fashion of their predecessors, playing patiently, working the gaps and dispatching the occasional bad ball for 4. Henry unluckily pulled a short one to Doran at square leg who pulled off a good one handed catch with 30 runs left to get. Hutchison then brought up his 50 and skipper Lang ensured the students would not have to face the second new ball with a couple of lusty blows off Clark. Lang brought up a well earned victory with a flick to the square leg boundary in the 79th over.

For the Students, Creed 65, Dawson 56 and an impressively mature 53 by Hutchison were the cornerstone to the innings. For Fairfield Liverpool, Lambert bowled with venom and Clark kept it tight and always looked threatening. All bowlers worked hard but really needed more runs to play with on a flat wicket.

2ND GRADE
McKay made it 2 tosses from 2 at the VG this season and did not hesitate to bat. Again we were off to an explosive start with Gardner playing his shots early before being caught behind for 25, 1 for 29 after 6 overs. At the other end Meds looked determined but fell to a good ball being caught at slip. McKay and McNeil came together and built a 70 run partnership looking very comfortable before McKay edged one behind to go for 38. Another 70 was put on between Wakim and McNeil before Wakim spooned a fully off their spinner to be out for 39. Bandit put on 50 with Jimmy before being caught behind for 21 and when Browny was out on debut for 0 we looked in a bit of trouble.

But McNeil was unfazed and never looked like he would get out, batting sensibly and punishing any error by the Fairfield attack. He went on to post back to back 150s, eventually out trying to lift the scoring at the end of the day for 160. Webby put on 140 with Jimmy, working hard for his 52 and really putting his head down. We declared at 9/371 to have a crack at them at the end of the day and Lawrence broke through to leave them 1/21 over night.

Day 2 was a hard slog but all bowlers bowled to the plan, keeping the pressure on Fairfield despite a lack of wickets. The last 5 wickets fell in the last 20 minutes of the day with Fairfield only needing 40 to win. All bowlers bowled superbly all day with Apples, Browny and Meds taking the wickets early on, before McKay (4) and Meds (1) finished the job in the last 20 minutes.

Some great catching by McNeil, Brown, McKay and Webb sealed the win late in the day. Well done to the boys whose efforts were rewarded as we stayed in the game and were able to snatch the win at the end.

UNSW 9(Dec)/ 371 (J McNeil 160 J Webb 52 B Wakim 39 S McKay 38) def Fairfield-Liverpool 349 (S McKay 4/39 R Medley 2/75 M Appleton 2/38) at Village Green

3RD GRADE
There were no concerns from day 1 as the pitch was hard with an even covering of grass and fairly quick outfield. UNSW won the toss and elected to field. Fairfield were travelling very well at tea being 3/138 approx off 38 overs. We didn’t bowl well enough up to that point, to have reduced the run rate or taken more wickets.

After tea however, we took 7/33 with most wickets falling due to poor shot selection from the Fairfield-Liverpool players. We wrapped up the innings in the 47th over, Fairfield-Liverpool all out 171. The Growler with 4/31 the pick of the figures.

UNSW then had 31 overs to bat out on day 1 and finished 2/86 with Kosta 46 not out.

On day 2 unfortunately the wicket was not the hard wicket of Day 1 and after a late start the Lions ran through our batting and we were rolled for 141 with Kosta top scoring with his 46. A disappointing end to the game after a great fight back on Day 1.

Fairfield-Liverpool 171 (S Crowl 4/31 J Shah 2/23) def UNSW 141 (S Kostoglou 46 J Shah 26) at Don Dawson

4th GRADE
A very surprising (and negative) decision by Fairfield-Liverpool to bat on into the second week saw them reach 7-386 and leave us requiring a run rate of 5.2 off our 74 overs to sneak an unlikely victory.

Daniel Mulvenna again showed good application opening the batting before being dismissed for 43. Matty Edwards looked good before hitting a rank full toss straight back to the bowler for 30. The day however belonged to one Peter Carson who struck his second successive ton for the Bees. A sublime knock of 152 NO by Pablo carried us through the day for a draw. Pab was very ably supported by Cob who finished the day 22*. Although no points for the Bees, it was a very positive draw, with the team showing real character to bat the day out.

We are building momentum and 6 points are just around the corner…

Fairfield-Liverpool 7(Dec)/386 (R Dooley 2/68 T Elliott 2/73) drew UNSW 7/289 (P Carson 152* D Mulvenna 43) at David Phillips North

5TH GRADE
Stand in skipper C. Ward lost the toss and was asked to field on day 1 and the bowlers rose to the challenge. The new Wij, Ryan Wijayaratne snaring 2 in his opening spell putting us in control early. G-Per came on and poached two more to put us in charge going into tea at 5/118. Wardy and Wij tidied up after tea with Wardy taking 3/8 off 11 before bowing out to unfitness leaving Fairfield 8/136 in the 10 overs after tea. Some super efforts in the field saw the close of innings not long after.

We saw off the 17 overs left in the day with G-Per 18 and Hoody 28. Fairfield-Liverpool 164 v UNSW 1/57.

Day two and G-Per raced to 52 off 44 balls before getting a leading edge to a ball waiting to go to the boundary. At 2/97 all that was required was one solid partnership to close it out. Two quick wickets fell after G-Per before Hoody (81) and Ranga (25) combined to get us over the line for 5's second win in a row.

UNSW 7/200 (P Hood 81 G Pereira 52) def Fairfield-Liverpool 164 (C Ward 3/8 R Wijayaratne 3/33) at David Phillips South

UNSW BLACK
Batting first our top order failed to make any impressions yet again, which saw us on the ropes at 3/10. Sean Garton however managed to save the day yet again, along with Ryan (Rhino) who put on a 92 run partnership which saw clinical straight drives over the bowler’s heads and a full array of pull shots, behind and in front of the wicket. Unfortunately after Ryan and Sean there weren’t too many more fireworks, but a cameo from Ben Lawson and a solid 31 not out to Kaushal Das saw us pass the 200 mark.

The first week on the field we were a player short, and the Penrith captain took full advantage of our bowlers with a quick fire 65. However wickets at constant intervals thanks to Ryan and Yash ensured we would remain in the game and have a sniff of victory in the second week.

Week 2 began with the return of Jamie Crichton, alongside Ryan who started off proceedings. With the rain in their backs and water dripping down their hair, both the bowlers managed early breakthroughs. This left Penrith at 8/163, chasing 208, however their opening batsman who was injured the previous week came out swinging and with a bit of luck managed to see Penrith through in a very close game. A great effort by our bowlers, but in hindsight we lost this game in the batting department as we fell a few runs short of a par score. Better luck next week boys.

ONE's WIN AND PG's LOSE IN T20 DOUBLEHEADER

Round 2 of the PG and 1st Grade Twenty20 comps took place at the VG on Sunday November 8th against Penrith with mixed fortunes for UNSW.

POIDEVIN-GRAY
In the first game PG's scored 9/117 off their 20 overs with the in-form Blake Hutchison top scoring with 55 off 47 balls. Unfortunately for The Bees no-one else managed to get past 15.

In reply TVDG, Crichto and Mick Rea all bowled well but it was not enough to stop the Panthers from securing victory in the 19th over with 5 wickets to spare.

Penrith 5/119 (S Crichton 3/22 T Van der Gugten 1/9) def UNSW 9/117 (B Hutchison 55 J McNeil 15) at Village Green

1ST GRADE
In 1st Grade Penrith won the toss and batted first and their openers looked in good touch until Van der Gugten snared Hunt, well caught off a lofted cover drive by Henry. The other opener Silk took control, working singles and twos off most balls and with Jackson took the score to 73 before Zehner struck, bowling Jackson. Just as Silk (61 off 53) started to open up with a six and a 4, Stewart got him, stumped by Dawson. The rest of the Penrith bats found the gaps in the infield and ran hard but only Betros really found the boundary and Penrith ended up 4 for 143 off their 20 overs. Lang proved the most difficult bowler to get away (0-16 off 4) with the rest of the bowlers picking up a wicket each for around 30 off their allotted 4 overs.

Gowland began the students innings in a hurry with 2 cracking pulls to the fence off Lalor but he then attempted a suicidal single only to be run out, 1 for 28 after 3. Creed and Dawson worked into the innings, keeping the run rate up with regular boundaries. Creed tore into Smith in his only over pulling and driving him for 3 fours and Dawson took a liking to Lalor for another 2. With the Students starting to cruise towards their target, Clarke trapped Dawson in front sweeping, out for 24 off 28, 2 for 76 off 11. Lang skied a drive off Newman for 13 and when Creed was run out for 42 off 38 and Henry bowled by Lalor for 1, the match hung in the balance, 116 in the 16th over. Hutchison smashed a crucial boundary and with Dean, put the field under pressure looking for 2’s. When Hutchison skied a drive, Matthews joined Dean with 15 runs to get off 10 balls for victory. Dean took matters into his own hands in the penultimate over, smashing Lalor to cow corner for two fours. It was up to Matthews to bring up victory off the 4th ball of the final over, lofting Halse to the fence, giving the Students their 2nd victory in 48 hours.

ROUND 4 RESULTS

It was a great round for UNSW with 1's, 2's, 3's and 5's all recording great wins against Hawkesbury. 4's also piled on the runs but had to settle for a draw. Club President Andrew Jones got to ring the Ton-O-Meter's bell an amazing 5 times during the round with Blake Hutchison (1st Grade), James McNeil (3rd Grade) and Mick Rea (4th Grade) all notching their maiden tons for the Club. In 2nd Grade veteran Dave Carson scored his 8th ton for the Club while in 4's brother Pete ensured it was a Carson Run Fest as he picked up his 5th grade ton. In 2's Will Lindsay produced the best bowling effort of the round picking up a 6-fa.

1ST GRADE
A match winning partnership of 115 between Jimmy Henry and Blake Hutchison has guided first grade to a 4 wicket win over Hawkesbury at Owen Earle Oval.

Chasing 190 for victory Uni slumped to be 5-70 early on day two before Henry and Hutchison came together and produced a classy stand to get the Bumblebees over the line. Hutcho finished unbeaten on 100, this being his maiden first grade ton and his first for the club and there was no better time to produce it with his side staring down the barrel.

Henry showed why he will be the buy of the season with a gritty 60 against his former club. He capped off a fine all round game also snaring 2-24 on day one.

The bowling by first grade on day one was the best I have seen in my five and a bit years at the Club. On a flat track and lightning quick outfield all the bowlers toiled away with patience and persistence. Lang 3, Vanders 2, Big Red 2 and Henry 2 being the wicket takers.

Uni look forward to next week with an away trip to Fairfield-Liverpool. A win in this game and the Bees will be knocking on the door of the top six. Lets get that roll on happening boys.

2ND GRADE
2's made the most of their first home game of the season with great performances with the bat and ball.

Day 1 was the Dave Carson show as he settled in against the Hawkesbury bowling and displayed the discipline required to make big scores. After just over 4 hours of batting Carso was run out backing up at the non-strikers end for 158. Good luck to Carso and Holly on the birth of their first child in the coming weeks, hopefully he will be back soon!

Meds opened well with a very comfortable looking 53 and there were a couple of 20s around Meds and Carso before Wilbur added 37 valuable runs toward the end of the day. The Bees declared at 9/350 overnight.

The hunt for 10 wickets started well on a belter of a VG wicket but we let them off the hook before lunch, going in at 2/123. We then stood up and dominated the next session, bowling to plans and backing it up in the field. Pressure and a great spell from Will Lindsay brought us the 8 wickets we needed by tea. Wilbur bowled the perfect spell of bowling on a VG wicket, surprising batsmen with his change of speed and movement. He ended up with 6/43 off 14.

All bowlers backed Wilbur up in this session and brought us the 6 points, Hawks finishing on 246. The first of many wins for 2s this season.

The Dubbo boys then brought the shotguns out to celebrate the win before heading to the Donny for some beers sponsored by Bandit. A big thank you to Chris O’Brien, Dexter Crowe and Wally Reid for helping out with the scoring over the 2 weeks – much appreciated!

Bensons Lane...a lovely place to play cricket and take 6 points.

With little or no chance of rain in sight, the skipper lost the toss and was asked to field, Apples got us off to the perfect start with 2 snick-offs inside the first ten overs, the Soulman then claimed one in his second over and we were on our way, Hawkesbury on the ropes at 6/121 at tea.

The ˝ hour after tea was to be crucial, James McNeil delivered finishing with 4/36, Apples/Soulman handy 2-fa’s and the J-man 9 overs 6 maidens 1/11. (Hawkesbury’s opener made a useful 54 but gave it away pushing for runs).

We saw out our 23 overs with Hoodwink 25no & Macca 34no 1/67. Hawkesbury 178 v UNSW 1/67 at stumps.

Day two and Macca raced to his 50 while two quick wickets fell and with the score on 101, Bowie joined the race and these two saw the target off, with Macca playing a chancless 100 and Bowie riding his luck for 46. Casual knocks by Rochey and J-man saw Kostya Zu 14no, guide Macca to his maiden 151no.

An honest draw for the 4's. An M4 like DP pitch and some excellent batting application saw both teams pile on the runs. Micky Rea and Pablo starring for the Bees with outstanding tons while Mulvy chipped in for a well compiled 65.

The Bees toiled pretty well, but 6 half chances were put down and a wicket offering no assistance at all saw the Hawks finish 7 down. Luke Ford, 4-98 off 26 overs was outstanding and despite not taking a wicket Murray Crowe (0-40 off 17) bowled very well. Our fielding needs to improve.

A good win for 5s was set up in the second half of Day 1. Cruising at 2-153, Hawkesbury self-destructed as soon as our spinners came on and lost 8-61. Offie Tom Atallah (4-30) and leggie Karthigan “Bala” Balasubraminiam (4/46) split the wickets after a run-out and James Hamilton’s initial breakthrough. With 23 overs left to bat, a positive approach was required. Happily Tom Jagot and Gavin Pereira were both in great nick, and they took us to 1-101 at stumps. TJ was out for his overnight score (50) but G-Per kicked on to make 81 and set up the chase. Tom Atallah (23*) applied the finishing touches after some middle order wobbles and we got the runs 7 down.

UNSW GOLD
After a bye and an abandoned game, UNSW Gold finally took the field against Georges River with great zeal and enthusiasm. Once again, twelve lads made their way to the ground; perfect for an evenly numbered pre-match soccer game for warm-up.

Uni won the toss and elected to bat on a somewhat slowish Bland wicket. After a quick flurry of early boundaries, the students eventually landed themselves into some trouble with a number of wickets falling at regular intervals. At 5-74, a par score seemed rather far-fetched and reasonably unforeseeable. However, the young and upcoming Ford, together with the reliable Williams combined together with an intelligent 123 run wicket stand, taking Uni to a more than handy total of 243.

The Bees started confidently with the new ball, exemplified when Holt knocked the top of off stump with an absolute peach of an outswinger. However, much of the early celebrations were short-lived as the boys had to deal with their middle-eastern Kieron Pollard. After being dumped from our very own club trials, it was apparent that he was on a mission of vengeance. In spite of making inroads on the other end, Uni failed to take vital chances and were consequently punished accordingly.

UNSW BLACK
Batting first at DP we were in trouble early with the top order being dismissed cheaply. However Sean Garton eased the nerves with a composed knock, playing shots all around the wicket and leading the counter attack. He was well supported by Matti Mifsud who courageously put a high value on his wicket, whilst able to grind out a solid 34. Wickets at regular intervals compounded by two run outs always meant we were never going to reach our full potential. But a special mention to the tail, with Arvind , Nick and Sanjay chipping in and ensuring we would have something to bowl at. Lincoln managed to snare a wicket with his tight leggies before end of days play, however week 2 was washed out, no doubt saving Sydney Uni's bacon.

ROUND 3 RESULTS

It was another rain affected round over the weekend with 3's, 5's and UNSW Gold all washed out. 2's and 4's suffered at the hands of Bankstown but 1st grade pulled off a miraculous victory to open their account for 2009-10. In a game that will be remembered for some time Eric Zehner and Charlie Matthews brought the VG to its feet as they guided The Bees to a last ball win.

1ST GRADE
Skipper Tim Lang may still be celebrating this cracking win as he has yet to submit his report. In summary though Langy won the toss and sent Bankstown in at the VG. A good bowling performance saw The Bees bowl Bankstown out for 209 in the 48th over with left arm spinner Cam Stewart picking up 4/19 off 6.1 overs at the death. Langy finished with a miserly 1/18 off his 10 and debutant Alex Day took 2/42 off 7.

In reply there were plenty of starts but no massive scores as Langy top scored with 41. At 8/170 Charlie Matthews joined veteran paceman Eric "Zoom Zoom" Zehner at the crease with plenty of work to do but they put on a match winning partnership to guide The Bees to a last ball win, which was brought up with a boundary! Super stuff lads.

2ND GRADE
Match report is still to come but at Bankstown Oval the boys look to have had a tough time of it as Bankstown racked up 2/295 with UNSW rolled for 129 in reply.

Bankstown 2/295 def UNSW 129 at Bankstown Oval

3RD GRADE
Washed out.

4TH GRADE
Very disappointing ‘batting’ display.

Despite the weather, we were greeted with the BEST wicket we will see all season. It was the kind of wicket, outfield and attack that you would hope to post 250 against. Instead we capitulated with soft dismissals and BBQ’s. The only noteworthy part of the batting day was Hugh Campbell, batting at 7 putting together 46 N.O while BBQing two of his partners in the process!

Robert Stark produced another fine spell of bowling, 2-19 of 10. But despite having JC in our attack, 120 was never going to be enough in such a batsman’s paradise. In general we bowled ok, though our fielding left a lot to be desired.

All the batsmen (excluding Hugh) should hang their head in shame. We will need to improve truckloads to compete this season.

Bankstown 3/123 (R Stark 2/19) def UNSW 120 (H Campbell 46*) at Jensen Park

5TH GRADE
Washed out.

UNSW GOLD
Washed Out.

UNSW BLACK
The boys, bar one, turned up to Alan Davidson Oval keen for a game of cricket. Seeing the outfield was as wet as the front row of women at a Michael Buble concert, we were not too confident of getting on. However after unveiling a good deck, the sun also came out and we began a 40 over match at 12pm.

UNSW lost the toss and fielded, something they would have elected to do anyway, rendering the toss as useful as an Iranian election. The Wij and Garlo bowled well and at drinks Uni were well on top. Some poor fielding in the circle and dropped chances helped Souths on to 177 after their 40 overs.

Pick of the bowlers was Matt Mifsud with 2/26 off his 8. Ryan Wijayaratne picked up 2/41 off his 8. Garlo and Sean Garton also picked a wicket each and Garlo picked up a run out. Not a bad day in the field for the replacement.

We started our innings on a road with a drier outfield and were confident of chasing down the total. A second wicket partnership of 60 odd off about 10 overs had UNSW cruising. The loss of three quick wickets evened the game out before a partnership between Mifsud and Mustafa steadied the ship. With 10 overs and 3 wickets in hand, we needed 30 and the gallery was confident. However, club debutant Dan Altman and Yash went out blocking out a loss and the run rate climbed to about 5. Some good batting and a lot of sundries saw us requiring 2 off 10 balls and we felt at home before a direct hit on what would have been the winning run brought Garland to the crease.

The stage was set...bowler charged in...missed the pitch and we won on a wide.

Nevertheless it was a good performance overall and a platform laid on which to build on. Pick of the bats was Andrew Julian with 50 off 45 balls, closely followed by 40 sundries. Mifsud with 18 and Naeef with 17 batted well.

ROUND 2 RESULTS

On a wet Labour Day weekend only 1st and 2nd Grade saw any on field action. Unfortunately the late storm on Monday ensured the 1st grade game ended in a draw while the storm arrived too late to stop 2nd grade from going down.

1ST GRADE
After day one being washed out on Saturday, First Grade finally got a start at the VG on Monday.

Sutherland won the toss and elected to bowl on a juiced up Village Green strip. Mitch Gowland and James Henry worked hard in tricky conditions against some good bowling by former New Zealand all rounder Andre Adams. Henry was given out caught behind in what looked like he didn’t go near the ball.

This brought together Gowland and Dawso, the pair batting superbly to take the score to 2/100. Gowlo playing a superb innings of 50 before chasing one after lunch. This was a real disappointment given Mitch had done all the tough work before the break.

The Bees’ batting fell away after lunch and we were all out 179 in 65 overs. We need to get the batting worked out otherwise we are in for a tough season. Players that get starts must get greedy and make sure they go on and get a big one.

Sutherland reached 2 for 57 in reply when the Sydney weather turned nasty once again and the two skippers agreed that enough was enough - the match ending in a draw after the day one washout.

I’m sure all the boys are looking forward to the one dayer against Bankstown this Saturday at the Village Green. This game shapes as a very important fixture. We need to get six points on the board to get our 09/10 season started.

UNSW 179 (M Gowland 50 D Dawson 34) drew with Sutherland 2/57 (J Day 1/0 T Lang 1/26) at Village Green.

2ND GRADE
Match report to come.

STARK CLAIMS RECORD

It was an historic day down at Snape Park on Saturday as Rob Stark claimed the 3 wickets he needed to overtake Greig Robinson as UNSWCC's all-time leading wicket taker. Starky finished with 5-18 (his 30th 5 wicket haul for the Club and his best ever figures in a one-dayer) to not only claim the record but also steer 4th Grade to a comprehensive bonus point win. Starky now sits atop the all-time wicket taking list on 633 wickets with the promise of more to come.

The UNSWCC Webmaster caught up with Starky to discuss his record and his career and the transcript of that interview can be read by clicking here.

The UNSWCC paparazzi was also on hand down at Snape to take a few photos for the Club's archives. These can be viewed by clicking on the links below.

ROUND 1 RESULTS

UNSW opened up their 2009-10 campaign against local rivals Randwick-Petersham. Despite having opportunities in all games only 4th grade managed a win with Rob Stark the star with 5-18. In the Metropolitan Cup the Black & Gold Derby resulted in a win for UNSW Gold.

1ST GRADE
We bowled well, we fielded well but, in this Grade, two of three doesn’t get you the biscuits!!!

Firstly UNSW welcomed four 1st Grade debutants in this game with James Henry (First Grade Cap #178), David Dawson (#179), Blake Hutchinson (#180) and Charles Matthews (#181) all doing the double debut with this also being their respective debuts for the Club.

Bowling first, having lost the toss, the Students started their season on fire. Lang led from the front, troubling the top order with tight bowling, snaring Coyte and Frith early with catches in the cordon. Van Der Gugten also troubled the top order, and got their No 3 hooking a quick bouncer. Day then throttled the scoring with a miserly spell of 10-2-0-22, while Matthews struck from the other end, destroying the middle order with 3 wickets in his 7 over spell. Stewart replaced Day and snuffed out Price’s attempt to resurrect the Randwick innings the ball after he reached 50, well caught behind by Dawson, cutting. Henry and Van Der Gugten mopped up the tail, together with Matthews throwing out Otto from cover. Randwick Petersham all out for 167 in the 44th, reward for a fine bowling effort in which not a single no-ball was bowled in a blustery wind. Good fielding pressure also created 3 or 4 run out opportunities which saw throws only miss by a whisker!

The Students’ confidence was dealt a huge blow first ball of their innings, when Henry was run out for what has been labelled a “Blood Diamond Duck” – out, not facing, the first ball of the season on debut!! Facing an opening attack with two state bowlers, Cockley and Coyte, it was the last thing the Students needed. Dawson and Gowland both fell with the score on 9, losing their castles. Lang was caught in the cordon hooking and Dean LBW playing across the line shortly after. Dean’s only scoring shot was a well struck six off a free hit. When Day fell caught behind and McKay LBW, the Students' innings was in tatters at 6/66. Hutchinson and Stewart, then Hutchinson and Van Der Gugten had brief partnerships to give the Students some hope, but loose shots saw the last pair at the wicket with just 100 on the board. The inevitable end was in the 30th over, 46 runs short of a potential victory.

An opportunity lost is an understatement.

Full scorecard can be viewed by clicking here.

Randwick-Petersham 167 (C Matthews 3/28 T Van Der Gugten 2/31) def UNSW 121 (B Hutchinson 23 J Day 21) at Village Green.

2ND GRADE
What promised to be a great day for the bees turned into half a great day - the important part of the day where points are handed out was disappointingly sh*t.

With a number of talented debutants mixed in with a batch of blooded first graders, we had the team to challenge all comers. Bowling first we showed we will be a team to be reckoned with this season. A fine all round bowling effort, coupled with a faultless fielding display saw Randwick post a very gettable 160. Wickets were spread with both medium pace and leggies sharing in the haul.

The other half of the story was ugly for the Bees. Randwick bowled straight and stump to stump (much like the great Robert Stark would serve up - hats off to the record holder). We managed to play around them frequently enough to see a total of 8 bowled or LBW wickets. Throw in two woeful shots that were caught and we were bundled out 25 short of the target. Dave Carson was far and away the pick of our batting resistance scoring the lone 50 of the match.

Such a promising start to the game deserved some points, but we let ourselves down. There will be joy this season, but we'll need to keep up our bowling standards and learn some gritty and determined batting.

Randwick-Petersham 160 def UNSW 134 at Kensington Oval

3RD GRADE
The day started off well with an early toss and Roche was 1 from 1 for the season. From here it was up to Hoodie and Soulman to get us away to a start we could build from. Afetr a good solid ten overs of batting from Brown, he finally became the man we have come to know and love and put the Randy Pete's first change bowler within metres of Bandit's shiny Audi that was interstingly parked over long off!

But just as the Soulman found his groove he smashed one back at the bowler only for him to pick it up and ping it back at Brownie. Being the clever man he is, Brown jumped in the air only to have it hit his stumps before he had hit the ground again!!

Not long after Hood was gone and M Lang didn't last too long either, falling for the old short run up trick and being rapped on the pad before he had barely lifted his bat!

Then came a long succession of contributing starts with Bandit popping one to mid wicket and Roche being more concerned with the new import from the home country falling over mid single and forgot to make his ground.

As for the Geezer himself (or Softie as he later became known), he managed a quick 20 odd, as did Kosta (Taronga) and even JC himself (Wardie) added a handy 15. Apples had the last ball of the innings...yeh...

Apples also took the first ball of RP innings and lead from the front and exposed the tail of RP early when R Smith came out to bat at 3!

Charlie attacked well from the other end but UNSW could not capitalise on his chances.

The wickets were evenly spread between the lads with Softie, Wardie and Brownie bowling well with Softie and Wardie sharing the scalps. The old dog Bandit toiled againgst the wind and did himself proud!

But, after Apples had finished his 10 with 3 for 31, the RP batters scrambled around for the remaining runs, passing the 200 target with 3.5 overs in hand.

A decent job all round for the boys with also a bit of work to do this week.

Randwick-Petersham 6/201 (J Brown 39 J Roche 37) def UNSW 9/200 (M Appleton 3/31 C Ward 1/33) at David Phillips North

4TH GRADE
The day officially belongs to Robert Stark who became the Club's leading ever wicket taker in the most convincing of fashions. Starky took a wicket in each of his first 3 overs to surpass the formidable previous mark of 630 wickets set by Greig Robinson. Starky nonchalantly continued on to end the day with the fantastic figures of 5-18 (10). All in a days work for the Stark.

In other news – 4th Grade had a good first up victory!

Batting first in near gale force winds, the Bees' score ticked over at a mere snails pace. The top 4 failing to make significant contributions. Luckily new comer to the club Great Dane Williams remained composed and added a valuable 23 in the context of the day. The evergreen Peter Carson looked in sublime form, monstering a hapless spinner for a huge maximum and ending with a well composed 33. Micky Rea batted beautifully for 36* to give the bees some hope of defending a total of 160.

As already mentioned Mr Robert Stark took the new ball and had an immediate impact. Starky was well supported by Great Dane, who while not taking a wicket was as tight as a fish’s proverbial. Timmy Elliott bowled very well and ended with 2-19 (10) while new recruit Bala took 3 crucial wickets with his leggies and a good catch.

All in all a really good effort first up. We have a lot of room for improvement, especially in the fielding department but it was a very nice way to start the season.

Bring on round 2!

UNSW 7/160 (M Rea 36 P Carson 33) def Randwick-Petersham 122 (R Stark 5/18) at Snape Park

5TH GRADE
Fifth Grade were always chasing the game after losing the toss and suffering a composed century at the hands (and bat) of the Randwick No.3. Chasing 6/232 the Bees started slowly with a run out and a misfiring middle order. Hugh Campbell (46 off 69) and Tom Atallah (36 off 49) put together an excellent partnership but were left with too much to do, getting out hitting when we needed 50 off the last 5 overs. The rest followed and we went from 6-186 to all out 189. Hugh contributed 1-34 off 10 overs of quality leg-spin, while Hooley Dooley picked up 3/36 off his quota.

Randwick-Petersham 6/232 (R Dooley 3/36 H Campbell 1/34) def UNSW 189 (H Campbell 46 T Atallah 36) at David Phillips South

METROPOLITAN CUP
With two UNSW teams entered into this year's Metropolitan Cup it was a schizophrenic’s delight at Alexandria on the weekend as UNSW played UNSW in the Black and Gold Derby.

Batting first UNSW Gold racked up 9/195 off its 50 overs with Manas Choudhury top scoring with 56. Sean Garton was the chief destroyer with the ball for UNSW Black as he took 4/34 off his 10. Yash Chandwani also bowled a tight 10 overs to finish with 1/28 off his 10.

In reply UNSW Black were rolled for 164 in just the 37th over with Ed Higgins' 55* off 39 balls, which included 4 bombs, the top score. Bikram Karmakar manufactured 47 off 66 balls. Reading between the lines it looks like the rest of the batting order did not contribute much at all. Wickets were shared around with Sohaib Rashid (2/25), Arvind Annamalai (2/30), Hasnain Jafri (2/32) and Ravin Hettiarachchi (2/33) all getting a piece of the action.

UNSW Gold 9/195 (M Choudhury 56 N Saleh 22 S Garton 4/34 Y Chandwani 1/28) def UNSW Black 164 (E Higgins 55* B Karmakar 47 S Rashid 2/25 A Annamalai 2/30) at Alexandria

VALE PETER RICHARDSON

It is with great sadness and regret that I write to let you know that Peter Richardson passed away on July 11th.

Richo was a great servant of this club and he will be very sadly missed. A true gentleman, Richo was very well respected across the entire Sydney cricketing community and his loss will be sorely felt. A legend at our Club and also at Burwood Briars, where he played for many years, Richo carved out a special place in the history of both Clubs that were fortunate to have benefitted from his loyalty, hard work and good humour.
